Glocks are Reliable? CAN YOU PROVE IT?

The reputation that Glock has established for reliable handguns is nearly legendary. However, without purchasing one, how can I know that any particular Glock is, indeed, reliable? What are the standards for determining reliability? If it is simply a matter of hearsay, the question would be quite decided. Looking through forums, talking with firearms owners, and looking through comments on my own YouTube videos yields thousands of people who all contest to the reliability of Glock firearms. Perhaps it is a consequence of pursuing a biology major in college, but I am somewhat of a scientific thinker. Before I accept any claims of reliability for any firearm, I want to familiarize myself with research on the subject -- especially peer reviewed research.
I am curious as to how you determine a firearm's reliability prior to purchase. For example, if a certain volume of law enforcement or military personnel rely on a particular gun, does that become a standard of reliability for that firearm? Or, perhaps, are there statistics that you like to track -- for example, failures per 1,000 rounds, or per 10,000 rounds? I've spoken with some shooters who develop preferences for certain manufacturers who trust the reliability established by the "track record" of the company's various firearms. That leads me to question how they would evaluate the reliability of new guns that by their definition do not have a recorded history of performance.
Out of this curiosity, I decided to perform a sort of informal survey of various reviews on a firearm with a well-documented track record of reliability: the Glock 19. I searched Google with the key words "Glock 19 reliability article" (for this exercise, I wasn't interested in forum discussions, only written reviews) and looked at three of the top five results. USA Carry's review on the 19 informs the reader that the handgun is reliable because "Glocks are more reliable and durable than practically any handgun available at any price." However, Hi Powers and Handguns established the 19's reliability through testing with five different types of ammo, varying in bullet type, grain weight, and ammunition manufacturer. The author doesn't include round count for each type of ammo, but does note that "There were no failures of any kind with this pistol." The last article I compared was posted on The Truth About Guns. This author summed up the Glock 19's reliability succinctly, "It's a Glock. 'Nuff said. (No hiccups of any kind.)"
Websites like TTAG, and our very own Loadout Room serve as sources of information for would-be gear purchasers. But, there are other places to gain the benefit of others' experience with a firearm before having the opportunity for personal testing. YouTube can be another resource for information and opinions on gear. Whose feedback do you trust when you want to determine a firearm's durability?
Recently, I compared the Glock 19 to the Ruger SR9C, and some of the responses to that video noted that I did not include reliability as a point of comparison. Overall, I'm still on the fence as to which I'd like to purchase. In that consideration, however, reliability is a factor, especially considering that a potential use for the pistol would be as an alternative conceal carry pistol. I challenge you, how can you prove that the Glock 19 is more reliable than the Ruger SR9C?
