Rep. Gallagher Joins the Hugh Hewitt Show

Hugh Hewitt: I know that 25,000 native Chinese entered the United States for the first time in the 2023 fiscal year, 10 times more than the previous year, and indeed, more than the 10 years combined. What do you make of that, by the way? The small fact that more than 24,000 Chinese nationals crossed our southern border?

Rep. Gallagher: I think it's a massive national security risk. I've asked the intelligence community to give us an assessment of whether this is just economic migration or something more nefarious. I've yet to receive that assessment, but anytime you're dealing with military age males on that scale from our primary foreign adversary, you have to assume that there is a national security risk involved.

Hugh Hewitt: Now you're the chair of the Select Committee on engagement with the Chinese Communist Party, so you know a lot about the CHICOMS. Given that they know our border is open, and that we had 3,200,000 people cross it last year, 2,706,000 people cross it in 2022, 1,905,000 people cross it in 2021, do you think the Chinese know that it's open and have plans for it being open?

Rep. Gallagher: Well, certainly they know it's open. I guess I confess to you my primary concern, particularly given that chaos in the Middle East continues to spiral out of control, is that a terrorist group would exploit the wide open southern border in order to hurt America. What the Chinese have done for years now over the last decade, is actually more insidious, and doesn't require you to come up with some complicated, Hollywood-esque plot where they would send military males across the southern border to do something to us domestically. They've done two things to us that don't even require them to go that far. One, they've allowed the flow of deadly fentanyl, the precursors of which are produced in China, to go across the southern border killing over a million Americans... The second thing they've done, at least according to open source reporting, is to wage cyber warfare against us and our critical infrastructure aggressively. Every single day, our critical infrastructure, and I'm not just talking about a DOD network or a nuclear command and control site, I'm talking about your local water utility is under attack from a variety of cyber actors, foremost among them, the Chinese Communist Party.
