We here at MV often wonder how different the world would’ve been had Temujin never become Genghis Khan. The man managed to bring several warring Mongol clans together under his authority and then proceeded to absolutely steam roll every enemy he came across. The empire established by him came to encompass nearly a fifth of the world, six hundred years before the British used their ships and their guns to take over a quarter of the same. It represents the raw, unbridled power of the Khan, but none of it would’ve been possible if he hadn’t been elected Khan during a special ceremony. Or to be more precise, gathering. The Kurultai was convened every time the Mongols needed to appoint a new khan to lead them, but it was so much more than that. It was a time of celebration and strategy, and many kurultais from the thirteenth and fourteenth century have managed to live on as the elected governments of Central Asian countries. But in Berserk, this gathering takes on a whole new meaning, especially since it isn’t being conducted by tribes from the steppes. The Kushan Empire also has a tradition called Kurutai, but while it looks and functions in a way similar to Genghis Khan’s, there is no similarity between it and the one that occurred in real life. In this video, we’ll be breaking down what the Kurultai is, its success rate in the real world, and its prospective future in Berserk.
