The Lister powered a 6 bay dairy here at the farm in the days before electricity. I have a memory of standing in the machinery room watching it working, attached to a ceiling-mounted drive shaft by a long leather belt. I could not work out how the belt didn't fall off. That is still a mystery that is beyond my ken.
I recall that they got the power on in about 1976. Since then, the dairy was demolished in 2002, so the Lister was taken down to the 'feed' shed, along with all other useful but unneeded things, whether broken or not.
We retrieved the Lister from the feed shed in 2013, and it sat in the new shed, waiting for me to become skilled in engine repairs. That didn't happen until I was having a pre-Christmas beer with Owen in 2016. He suggested that I take it down to Canberra where we could fix it in his garage. Over a series of weekends in 2017, we pulled the head off, repaired and replaced a few components, and put it all back together in February 2018. Owen's son Jethro was handed the phone to record the historic 'first start'...
That's uncle Dave in the title screen. It would have been his job to start the Lister before milking each morning and night.
