They Dropped Their Grandfathers Old Waltham Pocket Watch And Asked Me To Fix It

Описание: I was talking to a family member over the weekend and the subject of watch repair came up. They were moving things around and accidentally dropped their grandfathers pocket watch onto the floor! I told them I'd take a look at it and if anything needed to be repaired, I'd gladly restore it for them.

Which brings us to this lovely grade 820 Waltham. A respectable 15 jewel movement with a high level of damaskeening, I could see right away that this watch had been well maintained. The balance staff was obviously bent, but other than that this watch was quite refreshing to work on.

I think restoring a family heirloom like this is one of the best feelings you can experience as a watchmaker. Not only hearing about the history of the watch and the original owner, but seeing how much it means to their descendants and how happy they are to hear it ticking again.

Also I have a new camera! Hopefully I'll be able to capture more of the watch repair process with this second angle. (plus I'm sure the 4k resolution is nice, even if I'm still stuck with a 1080p monitor)

Waltham Grade 820

Parts repaired, replaced:
Balance staff (bent pivot, new staff installed)
Ratchet wheel + retaining plate (polished)
Mainspring (bent, reformed)
Minute hand (broken, mismatched. replaced with nos)

Lubricants used:
9010 - Balance, escape wheel, 4th wheel
9415 - Pallet stones
1300 - 3rd wheel, center wheel, barrel arbor, intermediate wheels
8200 - Mainspring
9504 - Keyless works, canon pinion
