The Liberty Earthworks – A Hopewell Tripartite Earthen Complex,
presented by Gary Argabright of Chillicothe Ohio, August 13, 2024. The Liberty Earthworks site is one of five tripartite Earthworks located in Ross County Ohio attributed to the Hopewell Culture. Also known as the Harness site, it has been professionally studied less than many of the Hopewell Earthworks. However, it has many unique features and has an unprecedented record associated with the lithic distriibution of flint artifacts found by surface collectors between 1963 and 2008.
Other local Ohio organizations with cooperative interests in the Ohio earthworks and mounds are: Clarke-May Museum at 162 W. Union St, Circleville Ohio (http://www.pickawayhistoricalsociety.org), Southern Ohio Museum and Cultural Center at 825 Gallia St, Portsmouth Ohio (https://somacc.com and youtube channel),
Ross County Historical Society, 45 W Fifth Street, Chillicothe Ohio (https://rosscountyhistorical.org/)

Special thanks to the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park for use of their meeting room at 16062 SR-104, Chillicothe Ohio (https://www.nps.gov/hocu/index.htm)
This presentation was made possible by the Mound City Chapter ( / moundcitychap58 ) of the ASO (Archaeological Society of Ohio , https://www.ohioarch.org/). In existence since 1958, Mound City Chapter holds monthly meetings from March through November. Chapter dues are due in November for the upcoming year. At most meetings, MCC guest speakers present on area historical and archaeological subjects, particularly related to the Adena and Hopewell cultures ( Indian Mound Builders) and associated Ohio artifacts in or near Ross County.
Indigenous American earthworks and artifacts, particularly Hopewell Earthworks in Ohio, have received much attention recently due to UNESCO World Heritage recognition. Chillicothe Ohio has a rich archaeological heritage and Ross County is generally considered to be the center of the Hopewell Culture (1600-2000 years ago). Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks, selected On September 19, 2023 for UNESCO World Heritage designation, include:
Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, Ross County Ohio
including:
Mound City Group,
Hopewell Mound Group,
Seip Earthworks,
High Bank Earthworks,
Hopeton Earthworks.
and elswhere in Ohio
Newark Earthworks State Memorial
including:
Octagon Earthworks,
Great Circle Earthworks.
and
Fort Ancient State Memorial.
There are other notable Ohio Indian Mounds and Earthworks in Ohio which may be nominated in the future. In particular, the famous Serpent Mound in Adams County Ohio is on a separate list of tentative nominations and is expected to be the centerpiece of its own nomination in coming years.
