Olá novamente!!!

Essa é sem sobra de dúvidas a música mais perturbadora do álbum “72 SEASONS”. Principalmente se você acompanhar a história contada no clipe e prestar a atenção na letra.

A letra de “Crown of Barbed Wire” é uma mistura de confissão e lamento. A metáfora da coroa de arame enfarpado é usada para descrever a miséria dos nossos “reinados” particulares. A satisfação que determinado poder traz é acompanhada de sofrimento para si mesmo, pois a coroa é descrita como “apertada”, de modo que “rasga a pele até a alma”. Afinal, a custo de quê conseguimos atingir nossos objetivos? A letra, ao meu ver, leva a uma reflexão ética sobre nossos desejos mais ambiciosos e os meios para alcançá-los e mantê-los.

Para reforçar essa ideia, o clipe da música retrata um assassino de bebê que é preso e encontra com o pai da criança que, em busca de fazer justiça com as próprias mãos, é preso voluntariamente. Na prisão, quem acaba levando uma surra é o próprio justiceiro. Detalhe: cada um dos membros da banda aparece e, ao invés de defender o pai em busca de vingança, acaba ajudando o criminoso no inchamento. Quebrando, assim, com as expectativas criadas pelos fãs que enxergam os seus ídolos como heróis.

Na bateria, como de praxe, foi mantida a estrutura original composta pelo baterista dinamarquês, modificando apenas a distribuição das peças (tambores e pratos) na execução da música. Dentre essas modificações destaco o ritmo da introdução, o qual no decorrer da música é recortado e reutilizado como virada que antecede o pré-refrão e finaliza o refrão. Em todas as vezes procurei variar as peças para deixar a coisa mais dinâmica, mas cuidando para manter a identidade da música.

Por fim, escolhi uma velha camisa do Sepultura para gravar essa música, pois no dia da gravação a banda anunciou que faria uma última turnê de celebração dos seus 40 anos e encerrariam a carreira. Então, foi uma forma de homenagear a banda que mais projetou o Brasil no cenário internacional. Além disso, a passagem do ex-baixista Jason Newsted pelo Metallica fez com que as bandas se aproximassem, dividindo palco em algumas ocasiões.

Hello again!!!

This is without a doubt the most disturbing song on the album “72 SEASONS”. Especially if you follow the story told in the official video clip and pay attention to the lyrics.

The lyrics of “Crown of Barbed Wire” are a mix of confession and lament. The metaphor of the barbed wire crown is used to describe the misery of our personal “reigns”. The satisfaction that a certain power brings is accompanied by suffering for oneself, as the crown is described as “tight”, so that “it splits the skin to the soul”. After all, at what cost can we achieve our goals? The lyrics, in my opinion, lead to an ethical reflection on our most ambitious desires and the ways to achieve and maintain them.

[SPOILER ALERT]
To reinforce this idea, the music video portrays a baby killer who is arrested and meets the child's father who, in an attempt to take justice into his own hands, is voluntarily arrested. In prison, the person who ends up getting beaten is the father himself. Detail: each of the band members appears and, instead of defending the father in search of revenge, ends up helping the criminal in the fight. Thus breaking the expectations created by fans who see their idols as heroes.

On the drums, as usual, the original structure composed by the Danish drummer was maintained, only modifying the distribution of the pieces (drums and cymbals) in the performance of the music. Among these modifications, I highlight the rhythm of the introduction, which throughout the song is cut and reused as a turn that precedes the pre-chorus and ends the chorus. Every time I tried to vary the pieces to make things more dynamic, but taking care to maintain the identity of the music.

Finally, I chose an old Sepultura shirt to record this song, because on the day of recording the band announced that they would do one last tour to celebrate their 40th anniversary and end their career. So, it was a way to pay homage to the band that most projected Brazil on the international scene. Furthermore, former bassist Jason Newsted's time with Metallica brought the bands closer together and sharing the stage on some occasions.
