Norwood is a picturesque town set in Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands, right in the heart of the island’s famous tea-growing region. Wrapped in mist-covered hills, endless tea plantations, and a cool, refreshing climate, Norwood provides a calm escape into nature.
Located in the Nuwara Eliya District, the town sits along the scenic road connecting Hatton and Maskeliya. Norwood is closely associated with Sri Lanka’s colonial tea heritage and is home to several renowned tea estates producing world-famous Ceylon Tea. Visitors have the opportunity to observe the full tea production journey, from hand-plucking fresh leaves to the final packaging stage.
The area offers sweeping views of emerald-green tea fields, opportunities to tour active tea factories, and peaceful nature trails ideal for walking and hiking. With nearby attractions such as Castlereagh Reservoir, Adam’s Peak, and Devon Falls, Norwood serves as a convenient and rewarding base for exploring the Central Highlands.
Kehelgamu Oya
Kehelgamu Oya is a major river in Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands and one of the two main tributaries of the Kelani River. Originating in the misty hill country near Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada), the river flows through steep valleys, dense forests, and tea-growing regions before joining the Maskeliya Oya to form the Kelani River, which eventually flows into the Indian Ocean at Colombo.
The river plays a vital role in Sri Lanka’s hydroelectric power generation. Its strong flow and steep gradient make it ideal for hydropower development, and it supports several power stations within the famous Laxapana hydroelectric scheme, including New Laxapana, Old Laxapana, Wimalasurendra, and Broadlands.
In addition to power generation, Kehelgamu Oya contributes to irrigation, drinking water supply, and ecological balance. The river and its surroundings are rich in biodiversity and are known for scenic waterfalls, rocky riverbanks, and lush vegetation, making the area attractive for nature lovers and photographers.
Castlereagh Reservoir
Castlereagh Reservoir is an important man-made reservoir located near Norwood in the Nuwara Eliya District. It was created by damming the Kehelgamu Oya as part of the Laxapana hydroelectric development scheme. Nestled among rolling tea plantations and mist-covered hills, the reservoir is one of the most scenic water bodies in Sri Lanka’s hill country.
The reservoir serves as a key water storage point for hydroelectric power generation. Water from Castlereagh Reservoir is first channeled through tunnels to the Wimalasurendra Power Station and later reused downstream at other power stations such as Old Laxapana, maximizing energy production from the same water.
Beyond its functional importance, Castlereagh Reservoir is also a popular attraction. Visitors are drawn by its calm waters, cool climate, and panoramic views of surrounding tea estates. The area is ideal for photography, peaceful walks, and enjoying the quiet charm of Sri Lanka’s tea country. It is also historically significant, as it was developed during the early stages of Sri Lanka’s hydroelectric power expansion
