In 1972, a Hutu insurrection broke out against the Tutsis leadership in Burundi, the Hutu extremists attacked and killed Tutsis living in the south of the country. What followed was a reprisal, the mass killing of between 100,000 to 300,000 Hutus by the Tutsi authorities. In December 2021 the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, set up by the state, affirmed that the 1972 massacres constituted a crime of genocide and a crime against humanity. 50 years later, the pain for Burundians is still very much alive.
