(13 Dec 2014) Members of the International Shugden Community protested in Rome on Saturday against the Dalai Lama's visit to the Nobel summit, accusing him of discrimination and preventing religious freedom.
Supporters of the California-based religious group say millions of Buddhists have faced persecution and segregation across the world since the late 1990s when the Dalai Lama banned making prayers to Dorje Shugden, a Buddhist deity.
Nicholas Pitts, spokesman for the International Shugden Community, said at the protest that members 'are not allowed to have jobs within the government, they do not get service in restaurant, in shops, and even in medical facilities.'
"In people's minds he represents peace and that is a wonderful thing, but in reality his actions are not peaceful. He has caused huge suffering to these people," Pitts added.
In 1996, Tibetan officials indicated that the Dalai Lama believed the spirit of Dorje Shugden was working against him, hampering his goal of winning autonomy for Tibet from China.
The Dalai Lama joined his fellow Nobel Peace Prize winners at a summit in Rome on Friday, amid controversy that Pope Francis would not meet the Tibetan spiritual leader, apparently to avoid antagonising China.
