When Mary Barua’s son, Neeraj, was diagnosed with autism in the 1980s, there was no internet, no mobile phones, and most importantly—no information. Doctors in India had no answers, and outdated beliefs blamed mothers for their children’s autism. But Mary refused to accept that narrative.

Her journey began with confusion, struggle, and isolation. She searched libraries, made expensive trunk calls, and traveled abroad to learn about autism. The challenges were relentless—Neeraj’s behaviors were misunderstood, schools rejected him, and society labeled him as ‘dangerous.’ Yet, Mary never gave up. She embraced her son unconditionally, and through patience and love, she unlocked his hidden potential.

From helping Neeraj, she started helping others. Parents began bringing their autistic children to her, and what started as personal support transformed into a movement. She trained teachers, created awareness, and laid the foundation for *Action for Autism*—India’s first organization dedicated to autism advocacy.

Through relentless efforts, she spread awareness across India, worked with pediatricians, and created resources so that no parent would feel the same loneliness she once did. She believed in *action*, not waiting for change but making it happen.
