At the end of the 20th century, one of the greatest environmental transformations in modern history unfolded. Diversions of the two great rivers that fed the sea — the Syr Darya in the north and the Amu Darya in the south — altered the delicate balance between water, climate, and life.

As irrigation expanded and cotton cultivation intensified, the sea began to retreat. Shorelines shifted by tens of kilometers. Fishing ports became ghost towns. Salt storms swept across newly formed desert plains, carrying traces of pollution far beyond the former coastline.

Yet the story is not only one of disappearance.

In the northern basin, ambitious engineering efforts have managed to partially restore water levels, offering hope that ecosystems can adapt and recover. In the south, however, the vast “Great Aral” continues to shrink.

Through breathtaking landscapes, encounters with local communities, and scientific analysis, this documentary explores how water shapes civilizations — and what happens when it is redirected.
