AVM Q&A
Q: The rear speaker terminals are not the most robust looking of connections are they? Is there a reason why they are so diminutive?
AVM: The little speaker terminals are despite the look, robust but not unbreakable. However, there is a Scottish colleague manufacturer L*nn who are using the same and they are very well being received as you may as well connect cables without having to use bananas (which you may also do). Again: Audiophiles use the Bananas and heavy gauge cables, all others are being offered the choice to connect things on the fly.
Q: The loading plugs for the phono amp seems a little over complicated for a freebee in an all in one unit. Is there a reason for that?
AVM: The plugs offer a very firm connection when the MC cartridge is adjusted. Bear in mind: We are dealing here with yV (microV). Dip switches in the signal path are rusting away, that is why we put special attention into the analog sources besides all streaming and digital sources. The vinyl is coming back big time and this is why we are offering a high class phono section in every detail. We offer the same plugs as in the PH 30.3, this is our stand alone phono stage for around 800 GBP.
Q: The CD is a slot loader. Again, any particular reason for this? I know some users prefer a tray you see.
AVM: Yep, special reasons as AVM was one of the first high end brands to use slot-in drives, we have made this popular since over a decade.
Little building room: The slotloader vs. the tray loader needs no space inside and the idling tray cannot flutter around once it has put down the CD onto the mechanism inside.
Reliability: The TEAC drive and loader are very reliable due to the reduced number of moving partsparts, the tray cannot be broken off.
This CD drive version is a red-book CDPlayer/drive. Many of our target customers have still a large collection of CDs and like to have a nice playback system for these. Competitors (Scottish and Danish brands again) offer no more CD playback possibilities. Naim uses slot-in as well. In case a CD is not on the wishlist, there is a sistermodel AS 2.3 which is identical to the CS 2.3 but without the CD, so we have choices available.
The tray loader offers the possibility to seal off the entire mechanism from dust (except the slot)
The Tray loader may be spring loaded, and this is what we do: The mechanism is largely inherent from footfall and reduced reading errors to a very large degree
Overall: A lot of good reasons for the slot-in mechanism and it allows to execute our design principle: Reduce to the max
Q: The loading plugs on the back of the box. You can plug one of three supplied loading plug pairs in there. Are those ratings the only choices on offer?
AVM: Intermediate ratings may be built to perfection by our retailers upon request and when needed. (I have asked about the cost or otherwise for this service but have yet to receive and answer - Paul)
Q: What Bluetooth codecs do you support?
AVM: We do support A2DP with the so-called SBC code which allows streams up to 345kBit/s.
We regard the BT function as a useful addition to allow a quick stream as a ‘tasting menu’ and for more audiophile or permanent use the Airplay (2) or high resolution options we offer.
