Let’s pretend for a moment that you haven’t read this story's headline. When I tell you that you’re about to read about an SUV with 19 cupholders, do you already know which one I’m talking about?
I’d wager you’d know right away that we’re about to dive into the Subaru Ascent. Now, that’s some effective marketing, right? Thing is, there are plenty of larger family vehicles on the market that have 15 or 16 cupholders. Will that extra three or four really make or break the ownership experience for anyone? Probably not.
On the other hand, I’m not sure Subaru’s count should have stopped at 19. I got that far and still kept finding little cubby holes and extra spaces that would be handy for stowing smaller drink bottles and juice boxes and LEGO creations and things. It’s as though someone found an automotive designer who also has four kids and gave that person free rein over the Ascent’s design. This is something that should probably happen more often.
