Historical & Religious Significance
The mela commemorates the martyrdom of the “Chali Mukte” (Forty Liberated Ones) — forty Sikh warriors who sacrificed their lives during the Battle of Khidrana (1705) while fighting for Guru Gobind Singh Ji against the Mughal forces. After the battle, the place Khidrana became known as Muktsar (“the pool of liberation”). �

Sikhs consider this one of the most important gatherings, and devotees take a holy dip in the sacred sarovar (tank) near the main gurdwara during the festival. �

When: Every year in January, around Miaghi (usually following the Lohri festival). �

Where: Sri Muktsar Sahib, Punjab, centered around Gurdwara Sri Muktsar Sahib — the main historic gurdwara of the town (not far from the sarovar where the Chali Mukte fought and attained martyrdom). �
