5 things I wish i knew when i started Hyrox...

My name is Anthony, I have now done 12 hyrox races, 8 of them in the Pro category and it took me nearly all of those races to figure out what I was doing wrong when it came to racing. 🙄
I used to think I knew exactly how to approach the training and the race. So I ignored anything anyone had to say about it, thinking I’d just prove them wrong… 🔥
Well I didn’t. I ate my words nearly everytime. It wasn’t until I started to really pay attention to what was happening in my races and training that I started to figure out what was going on.
These are the 5 things (plus a bonus one) that I was doing wrong… and it was costing me better results. 👇🏼
✅ Hyrox training doesn’t revolve around race simulations.I used to think I had to do full simulations to improve. You don’t. Focused training blocks with skill work, running quality, and fatigue tolerance get you way further.
✅ The race doesn’t start until after the rower.You’ll feel good early — that’s the trap. The real race begins when the fatigue sets in… and you still have 3 brutal stations to go.
✅ Let everyone else go out hot.Chasing the pack in the first few runs will kill your race. Trust your pacing. Play the long game. It pays off every time.
✅ Hard sessions are important — but the long, easy stuff is moreimportant.Those 60–90 min efforts teach your body how to recover while still moving. That’s the engine you’ll lean on come race day.
✅ Don’t neglect strength training.You can’t fake your way through the sleds, lunges or wall balls. Build real strength so you’re not just surviving — you’re moving with power.
🔑 Bonus tip: Train the skills behind the movements — not just the output.Sled push/pull, burpee broad jumps, lunges, and wall balls all have technique behind them.Mastering movement efficiency = free energy saved when it matters most.
