The sequence of events in the secretory process visualized by microscopy. A mutant temperature-sensitive VSV G protein (tagged with GFP) is trapped in the ER at the restrictive temperature; after shifting to permission temperature, the GFP-tagged protein buds into vesicles that travel along microtubules to the Golgi at the cell center. The protein then moves outward from the Golgi to the plasma membrane (more diffuse fluorescence over the surface at the end of the movie).
