Supreme Court bans NCERT Class 8 book over chapter on judiciary, orders seizure

Описание: The Supreme Court of India imposed a complete blanket ban on an NCERT Class 8 social science textbook carrying a chapter on “corruption in the judiciary” and ordered seizure of all physical and digital copies.

A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant termed the content a “well-orchestrated conspiracy” to defame the judiciary and issued show cause notices to the NCERT Director and the School Education Secretary, asking why contempt proceedings should not be initiated.

The court directed that the book be removed from public access across the country, warning that any further distribution, physical or digital, would amount to willful defiance of its order.

While clarifying that legitimate criticism of the judiciary is not being stifled, the bench observed that exposing students to a “biased narrative” at such an age could create lasting misconceptions.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta tendered an unconditional apology on behalf of the Ministry of Education. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on March 11.
