Mumbai Trans Hurbour Link End From Chirle Junction Latest Updates | MTHL End From Chirle Junction
Mumbai Trans Harbor Link is a 22 km long sea bridge being developed by MMRDA over Mumbai Harbor in Taraf Se Banaya Jayega, Maharashtra. Upon completion, the MTHL Project will become the longest sea link in India.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority is developing the bridge, which will connect central Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, a planned township located on opposite sides of the city.
The MTHL Project will provide an important link between the two urban areas and quick access to the southern part of Navi Mumbai. It will also promote the development and socio-economic development of Mainland and its surrounding areas.
The cornerstone for the MTHL project was laid in December 2014, marking the start of the bridge construction, while completion is scheduled for 2022-2023.
Home to over 12 million people, the MMR region is highly congested.
With the increase in the number of people traveling in the city every year, the residents and passengers of the city are facing serious problems including lack of housing, lack of open spaces and civic amenities, and overloaded road and rail transport infrastructure.
As most parts of the city have reached a saturation point, its peculiar geography imposes barriers to further expansion. Navi Mumbai is the only place to allow expansion, which has already seen development in its northern part.
There is still scope for development in the southern part of the region, which has 2,500 hectares of open land. Better connectivity between Mumbai and the mainland is essential for promoting both urban and industrial development in the southern part.
Airoli and Vashi bridge are the two road connectivity in the current which connect Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. However, the bridges are expected to reach saturation and will not support the transportation growth in the future.
Hence, the Mumbai Trans Harbor Link has become a necessity to meet the transportation growth. This will reduce the distance and travel time between the two areas and will help in the development of the rest of Navi Mumbai.
A comprehensive transportation study conducted by MMRDA suggested that MTHL would be an efficient solution to address the housing and transportation problems in Mumbai.
MTHL will be a six lane (3 on each side) expressway bridge in the Gulf of Mumbai. Out of the total length, about 17 km will be over sea and 5 km will be viaducts on either side of the land.
The bridge will start at Sewri in Mumbai and end at Chirle Villge in Raigad Division. Sewri has plans for a three-level interchange, where the Eastern Freeway and the Sewri-Worli East-West Connector will connect to MTHL.
MTHL will have approach section, interchange, intelligence transport system and other facilities required for sea bridge. The traffic situation on the stretch will be supervised and managed from the Traffic Control Center with the help of CCTV cameras and related facilities installed on the stretch.
Variable Message Signs (VMS) will also be installed to display information suitable for bridge users. The Bridge will be equipped with noise barriers near the Sewri earthen flat area and will see the barriers at BARC to meet the environmental norms.
The project will be constructed in three segments. The 1st section involves construction of 10.38 km long bridge section at Mumbai Bay and Sewri interchange, while 2nd section involves construction of 7.8 km long bridge section at Mumbai Gulf and Shivaji Nagar interchange.
The 3rd section involves the construction of a 3.61 km long viaduct, which includes the interchange at State Highway-54 and National Highway-4B near Chirle, Navi Mumbai.
