The oldest hospital of Europe 🏥
🔸The Hospital of Santo Spirito in Saxia has an incredible story which goes back to Ancient Rome! In short:
🔸The hospital was built on top of the ruins of a sumptuos ancient Roman villa, the Horti Agrippinae
🔸This area in 727 AD was occupied by the Saxons, a German population, who established facilities for the Saxon pilgrims coming to visit St Peter. That’s where the hospital’s name “in Saxia” comes from!
🔸In 1189 Pope Innocenzo III dreamt an angel telling him to give shelter to the unwanted children who were abandoned. That’s how the hospital was born.. in the 1100s! In the video you can see the “wheel” where the unwanted children where left for the hospital to take care of them
🔸But the glorious days came later. In the 1400s the same Pope who made the Sistine chapel thought of remaking also these hospital, which was deteriorating in bad conditions. That Pope was Sixtus IV
🔸Sixtus IV commissioned the renovation to some of the best artists of the time, including those who painted the walls of the Sistine chapel, such as Ghirlandaio and Pinturicchio! 🤩
🔸This structure was used as a hospital until 1967, then the hospital transferred to the modern structure next door. Now this building is used for conferences and events
The Corsie Sistine of the ancient hospital can be visited on specific days for free, by booking at this link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/bigliett...
