Mike Lane visits Austin Bonsai Society for the June 2020 meeting. The topic is Shohin Bonsai with a variety of specimen worked for demonstration. Mike shares his experience and approach for creating and setting up a tree for Shohin sized bonsai.

The Austin Bonsai Society is a non-profit organization to provide guidance and education for individuals who wish to expand their knowledge and skill in the art of bonsai.

The Society holds regular meetings on the second Wednesday of each month. Our social hour begins at 7:00 PM, followed by our program at 7:30 PM. We meet at the Zilker Garden Center building, located at Barton Springs Road in Austin, Texas. We offer individual and family membership. This membership include lectures, demonstrations, slides and other material. The Austin Bonsai Society usually organizes several digging trips each year to collect native plant material, such as cedar elm and Ashe juniper. Visitors are always welcome!

Mike Lane:
I began Bonsai in 2008 after receiving a small juniper as a gift and finding myself fascinated with it. The tree, as most first bonsai do, died and I was left wondering why?

I wanted to try again but on something a bit more substantial. I researched bonsai in my area and was pleased to learn that Wigert’s Bonsai Nursery was conveniently located within a 20 minute drive. I met Erik Wigert, and expressed both my admiration and desire to learn this Art from him. Originally I was told that there was no position at the nursery. I decided to essentially show my persistence by taking every class the nursery offered and spending all of my weekends there.
