How I Became an Entrepreneur for $100 (and Met My Wife)

That's what I did. And it led to meeting my wife.

I keep every business card I've ever had in this little case. The first card says "Founder and CEO." The last card says "Co-Founder and CGO." Both times, I made those titles up.

My first business cards were supposed to arrive Monday, but they came Friday instead. That weekend, a friend was in town. We went out. I met a woman I wanted to impress. I gave her the very first card out of the box.

That woman is now my wife—married 15 years, together over 20.

I don't know if I would've had the confidence to tell her, "I just have an idea, haven't made a dime yet." But saying, "I'm the founder and CEO of my own business"? That was easy. And that's really all an entrepreneur is—someone who decides they're going to try something.

A lot of people think entrepreneurs are visionary geniuses who spot problems nobody else can, have all the answers, and are natural risk-takers. But that's not how it works.

Corner store owners, nail salon owners, people selling scarves out of their basement—they're all entrepreneurs, even if they don't see themselves that way.

Being an entrepreneur isn't about grandeur. It's about going out and trying. Not having all the answers, but giving it a shot anyway. The only way to become one is to try—to see if anybody will pay you for the ideas you have or the things you make.

If you have dreams of starting something, don't get stuck on what qualities you think you need, or what your business card should say. There are all different shapes and sizes of entrepreneurs. The only thing it really takes is being willing to try.
