Su construcción superó importantes retos a nivel de ingeniería, debido a sus características topográficas, la variación de temperaturas extremas y su ubicación geográfica (la vía alcanza los 4,738 m.s.n.m, en donde se ejecutó uno de los túneles carreteros más altos del mundo: el Túnel Punta Olímpica de 1,380 m de longitud).
