While I don’t agree with the clearcut logging of these ancient forest ecosystems and KNOW that there is a better, more sustainable and honorable way to do it, occasionally these stumps give you a pretty unique insight into how a tree lives and grows!
Old Sitka Spruces, for example, often have these thick ribs or almost vein-like columns running up their stems, often corkscrewing counterclockwise as they age, and these form as rigid torsional supports that strengthen the tree based on whatever forces from the wind or elements it’s experiencing. In looking at the rings of this old tree, we can actually see how the layers of cambium from the same year have grown in thick sections alternating with thin sections, and how over the years the placement of these thicker sections changes, almost rotating around the tree as it grows and matures. Pretty dang cool to see how a tree can strengthen certain parts of itself year by year to create stronger, more resilient wood that allows it to thrive in its niche even more!
This clearcut on the other hand is still a bummer though.
