The conversation about booktok and anti-intellectualism has been going on for some time, but it has recently come back with a vengeance after a few booktokers made videos complaining about how "wordy" some books are and admitting that they sometimes skip whole descriptive paragraphs. cool cool cool.
I've made videos in the past about the reading aesthetic and the desire to be a "well read" person, which often manifests online in the form of speed-reading, readathons and/or people bulk-buying books and forcing themselves to read hundreds of volumes every year.
While I agree with a the majority of the criticism that booktok receives from people (including people on booktube and from the YouTube commentary and video essay community in general), I think there's more to it than just "all that smut is frying their brains".
In this video I try to explore a couple of other factors that contribute to the rise of anti-intellectualism online - especially on booktok - including the concept of reading stamina and the growing niche of book influencers. Emphasis on "influencers".
