Commercial properties have been hit the hardest in this year's Jackson County assessments, with local data analysts finding that only 1,100 saw an increase of 6% or less, while 2,300 properties jumped by 160% or more.
KMBC’s Andy Alcock spoke to one man who filed an appeal Monday after his tax burden increased ninefold.
Thu Tran plans major renovations on a building in the 500 block of Campbell Street in Kansas City.
“That is too much,” he said. “And we didn’t do anything with the building yet, you know? So, it’s just an empty building.”
Tax researcher Preston Smith found another issue.
This year, Jackson County leaders agreed to cap property assessment increases at 15% from the previous assessment, based on an order from the Missouri State Tax Commission.
However, Smith discovered county assessors are bypassing the order by creating new parcels.
One example: four parcels at Lake Lotawana were combined into one.
Smith found the new parcel had a 230% increase in assessment compared to the total of the four original parcels.
