A total blackout has paralyzed Cuba as the nation’s crumbling electrical grid suffered a complete systemic failure.
The Cuban Ministry of Energy and Mines on Monday confirmed a "complete disconnection" of the island’s power grid, leaving 11 million people without power. It's the third major islandwide blackout in just four months. Cuba has blamed President Donald Trump’s recent warning of tariffs on countries that supply oil to Cuba, which has effectively intensified a U.S. energy blockade against the island. President Trump on Monday even suggested the possibility of a "friendly takeover," describing Cuba as a "very weakened nation." As well as oil shortages, the Cuban government lacks the hard currency to repair its aging thermoelectric power plants.
