Saint Hilary of Poitiers, also known as Hilary of Pictavium, was a notable bishop and Doctor of the Church who lived from around 310 to 367 AD. He is often referred to as the "Hammer of the Arians" and the "Athanasius of the West" due to his strong opposition to Arianism, a belief that denied the divinity of Christ.
Hilary was born into a wealthy pagan family in Poitiers, France, and received a high level of education, including Greek. He converted to Christianity and was baptized, eventually becoming the Bishop of Poitiers around 353 AD. His most famous work, "De Trinitate" (On the Trinity), was the first Latin work to address the theological issues of the Trinity.
He was exiled to Phrygia by Emperor Constantius II for his unwavering support of orthodox Christian beliefs. Despite the exile, Hilary continued to write and defend his faith. Upon his return to Poitiers, he continued to combat Arianism until his death.
Saint Hilary's feast day is celebrated on January 13. He is the patron saint of children academically behind, children learning to walk, mothers, and the sick.
