When pruning old leaves from pumpkin vines, focus on removing yellowing, spotted, or overcrowded foliage near the base to improve air circulation and reduce disease risk. Use clean bypass pruners to cut stems at the base, just above a leaf node, avoiding damage to the main vine.
Target leaves touching the soil, which breed fungal issues like powdery mildew, and thin excessive growth to expose fruit to sunlight for faster ripening. Never remove more than one-third of the plant's total foliage at once to maintain photosynthesis and energy production.
After pruning, water at the base (never overhead) and apply a layer of straw mulch to keep soil moist and suppress weeds. This practice enhances vine health and accelerates pumpkin development.
