Pacifica Mountain Biking: Pedro Mountain (Burnside) - California Trip Part 1

The trails at Mount Pedro in Pacifica, California might have been some of the best mountain biking I have ever done! I, being from the east coast, have not experienced anything like this; from the flowy trails winding down the mountain with the open expanse of the deep blue ocean and sky in front of you, to the harrowing and steep rock slabs and chutes, Mount Pedro is the stuff of dreams! If you are in the Bay Area and are able to get a hold of a mountain bike, you should definitely try to make it out to Mount Pedro. It's an absolute blast! The Climb - There might be a better way to get to the main fire roads, however I just hiked up the Gray Whale Cove Connector trail. The fire road that leads to the top of the Crack, North Peak Access Road, is considerably harder than the Pedro Mountain Road which peaks at the bottom of the Crack trail. Since the North Peak Access Road has to gain an extra 300ft of elevation change to get to the top of the Crack trail in about the same distance, it is much steeper than the Pedro Mountain Road. Despite being very steep, I was still able to pedal up the whole way, only stopping a couple times. If you don't want to do the Crack trail, then the Pedro Mountain Road will be a much easier and pleasant ride to the top as it is half paved and much less steep. Most relatively fit mountain bikers will be able to climb up 3 times in a ride as I did 3 laps (2 on the North Peak Access Road and 1 on the Pedro Mountain Road) and I wouldn't consider myself to be very fit. My whole ride took me about 4 and a half hours.

The Crack - The Crack trail is probably the hardest trail I've ridden to date. However that might not be saying much since I am from the east coast. Nonetheless, this trail is incredibly steep, and super gnarly. Only riders with advanced mountain biking skills will be able to ride this trail. Most of the trail is doable for most single black riders with the exception of a couple of steep and technical rock rolls which is probably what gives the trail its double black rating. Despite the dangers and difficulty, it is a super fun trail when all the difficult features are conquered and linked up.

"Traversing the Ridge" - I know I say that I "traversed the ridge" in the video, however this trail isn't really on a ridge. It is a relatively chill ride with some flat spots and a switchback climb to the second peak where all the other trails start from.

Two Pines - Two pines is a fun, steep, winding trail, with lots of exposure and incredible views that makes its way down to Old Colma Road. Some of the switchbacks can be pretty tough to make and some of the corners are a bit loose, but this trail is an absolute blast!

Old Colma Road - Old Colma Toad, despite its name, is a trail (not a road) with incredible views and flow. It is a technically easy trail with an absurd amount of flow that makes perfect use of the elevation to create the longest descent possible. This trail took me roughly 13 minutes to get down with a couple of short breaks. The only thing to watch out for is the exposure.

Parking: During my limited time here at Pedro Mountain, it seems like the Gray Whale Cove Trail Parking Lot where I parked, gets pretty busy after 10am on a weekend as it was packed when I got down to the bottom. Considering it was a perfect Saturday morning with great conditions, this is understandable. But there seems to be plenty of spots other wise, especially if you get there before 9am which is what I did. Also, the parking is free.
