High Altitude Madness 🏔️ | Nubra Valley to Pangong Lake

Описание: 🏍️ On Day 6 of our Ladakh bike trip (24 September 2025), we rode from Nubra Valley to Pangong Lake, covering approximately 250 km through high-altitude passes, remote villages, and some of the most dramatic landscapes in Ladakh.

🍽️ We started early from Nubra Valley with just a cup of tea, riding for about 40–50 km before stopping for breakfast. The breakfast was packed from our Nubra property where we stayed last night, and we enjoyed it amid the calm morning landscapes before continuing towards the high passes.

🛣Our route from Nubra took us through remote villages and settlements gradually climbing towards the lesser-known Warila Pass at 17429 feet. Warila Pass is a scenic and relatively quieter route that connects Nubra Valley to the Sakti–Chang La region, offering wide open views, minimal traffic, and a raw Himalayan riding experience.

🗻After crossing Warila Pass, we descended towards Sakti village, where we stopped at the checkpost for document verification. Sakti is an important junction also known as Warila intersection in eastern Ladakh and serves as a connecting point for routes leading to Chang La and Pangong.

⛩From Sakti, we climbed up to the legendary Chang La Pass, standing at around 17688 feet making it one of the highest motorable passes in the world. Chang La has strong historical and cultural significance—it was traditionally used by traders moving between Leh and eastern Ladakh. The pass is named after Changla Baba, a revered saint believed to protect travelers crossing this harsh terrain. At the top, the small Chang La Baba Temple, maintained by the Indian Army, stands as a symbol of faith, safety, and gratitude for riders and travelers passing through extreme weather and altitude.

🛕 After we took Changla Baba’s blessings we started descending from Chang La and we reached around 3:00 PM at Durbuk an important town and junction on the Pangong route. Due to local protests happening that day in LEH, most shops and eateries were closed, making lunch uncertain. Thankfully, our support group arranged food for us, and we had a much-needed meal of veg biryani. We also refueled our bikes and stored some extra fuel in gallons at Durbuk before continuing further. We left Durbuk at around 4:00 PM.

🏜️ From Durbuk, the roads gradually opened up, leading us towards the iconic Pangong Lake, famous for its crystal-clear blue waters and changing colors. We spent some time near the lake, soaking in the views, clicking photos, and enjoying a bit of off-roading before reaching at the lake area.

🌊Pangong TSO or Lake is a holy lake in eastern Ladakh and West Tibet situated at an elevation of 13,862 ft & it is 134 kms long. The lake is 5 kms wide at its broadest point. During winter the lake freezes completely, despite being saline water.

❆As the day came to an end, we rode further to Man Village, where our stay was arranged. We stayed in lakeside cottages, offering the perfect end to a day filled with high passes, historic routes, and a glimpse into Ladakh’s living history. Nestled close to Pangong, Man Village offers a quieter and more peaceful experience away from the main tourist rush, making it a perfect place to rest after a long and demanding day.
