Billy Paultz actually lead the ABA in 1975-76 with 3.0 blocks per game. His averages in the league were steady on the whole as he put up 15.7 points, 11.1 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per contest in his ABA career. For that reason I was glad to see some of that defensive ability by The Whopper showcased in this particular game. Something that also was interesting was Paultz jumping on his free throws. Hal Greer and Darel Carrier were great from the line by jumping on those shots and credited that approach for their success. Is it a coincidence that Paultz was much better from the charity line in his ABA days? Maybe someone can correct me, but I don't recall Paultz doing this later in the NBA. I should check that out... 1976 ABA All-Star Game. January 27, 1976.
Edit - I specifically looked up Paultz shooting free throws while playing for the Houston Rockets. He still had this springy motion, yet his toes didn't leave the ground. In other news, he was right under 50% from the free throw line while playing in Houston. Hmm....
Disclaimer - four of Paultz's 10 points are missing from this video since the full game tape hasn't been aired since the game occurred.
