A display of the Scottish Highland Dance 'Wilt Thou Go To The Barracks Johnny?' by the Fiona Brandie School of dancing in Ballater. The second Thursday in August each year is Ballater Highland Games day in beautiful Deeside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. With the Games cancelled for 2021 due to Covid, the committee marked the occasion in Monaltrie Park, Ballater, with a picnic and fun day, involving local dancers, pipers and musicians.
The ‘Barracks’ is thought to have been a recruiting dance for the army from a period when a recruiting officer would go into a village with a dancer as entertainment, or to attract people to his temporary recruiting station. The dance is performed to such pipe tunes as Braes o’ Mar or The Barren Rocks of Aden.
