There was chaos after Petra Sorling was re-elected as ITTF president, winning by 104 votes to 102 over Qatar’s Khali Al-Mohannadi. There were then questions over the number of votes online. The cote was conducted by paper at the venue in Doha and by member associations logging in online. At the roll call, there were 16 online member associations present. There were then 21 online votes counted. This appears to be the result of other member associations logging on later to exercise their right to vote.
There are legitimate questions around the voting process but what took place after the vote is utter chaos.
In my opinion, the way the protests were made against the result turned in bullying and attempts at intimidation to try and change a result they did not like. I have no problem with appeals against the result as there is definitely some confusion around the process and the roll call but what we saw is simply unacceptable.
We must ensure that those who run the game are table tennis people. People who love the sport and are not simply interested in a power grab. We will see what happens next, I guess.
