From ‘the78prof’ playlist “And Then They Added Words.” Johnny’s theme was first heard in early 1959 via Paul Anka’s vocal recording of the song “It’s Really Love” • Paul Anka It's really love . Featured in the soundtrack of the French film "Faibles Femmes" (aka "Women Are Weak," aka "Three Murderesses"), the Anka-composed track was also issued on 45rpm in several European countries, though not in the U.S. at that time.
Flash forward one year to early 1960 as the Walt Disney Company's record label Buena Vista was boasting both Mouseketeer singing star Annette Funicello and veteran composer-arranger Tutti Camarata (conducting the label’s recording sessions). Both of them released new versions of the song…Annette in this posted track from her "Annette Sings Anka" LP, and an instrumental 45 single by Tutti's Trumpets re-titled "Toot Sweet" • Before it was Johnny Carson's theme: Toot ... .
Then in 1962, following the departure of Jack Paar from NBC's "Tonight Show," the tune was chosen as the program's new opening theme; but part of the deal was that new host Johnny Carson would take over publishing rights and also have his name added as co-writer of Anka's song, thus receiving a major chunk of the performance royalties. So we commonly see the Anka-Carson composer credit associated with what has over the years become best known as "Johnny's Theme."
Original issue on Buena Vista LP BV-3302 - It’s Really Love (Anka) by Annette, conducted by Tutti Camarata
