Chopin's oeuvre is extremely valuable for us pianists and his four ballades are amongst his most popular works in the standard piano repertoire.
The fourth ballade is, as it happens with most of chopin creations, filled with beautiful melodies, daring and fantastic harmonic sequences, all presented with a very developed pianistic language.
the work is also particularly complex because it requires a very refined sense of rhythm and a very polished phrasing and singing ability. It rarely relies on extreme technical complexities to get the listener's attention and it's also the longest with almost all recordings made by legendary pianists nearing the 12th minute.
I started learning this piece in late 2018 in preparations for my concerts in 2019 and I am glad I did know and not before because it is a work that benefits from having reached a certain level of artistic and technical maturity.
Upon careful inspection of the text, one soon realizes that Chopin expects from to pianist to interpret the different parts of the piece, which vary strongly in terms of character and message, and make tempo adjustments accordingly. That being said, It's important to notice that after the initial "Andante con moto" given by the composer, there isn't any other speed indication through out the piece. I avoided extreme tempo fluctuations as I recorded the piece.
