What does it take to put a precious object on display in a museum?
This uniform, worn by midshipman Charles Hare in order to escape Napoleonic France, has been cared for by his descendants for more than 200 years. Now, however, it is on display at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, allowing visitors from around the world to hear Hare's story and see the uniform for themselves.
"What I hope people will take away and appreciate is the immense number of hours and work that have gone into getting this uniform ready for display in the gallery,” conservator Aisling Macken says. “We are so proud to share the work we have done."
