The Swiss composer Walter Lang was almost an exact contemporary of Paul Hindemith. He was not only a composer and a concert pianist, but he taught piano as well. From 1922 to 1944, he taught piano at the Zurich Conservatory. From 1942 to 1948 he was a conductor and a pianist at Radio Lugano. Later he gave piano lessons at the Conservatories of Basel and Bern and at the Academy of Zurich. He composed in every musical form except opera. Being attached to the tradition of Brahms, Wagner and Bruckner, Lang's three sonatas for piano are inspired by the music of the first quarter of the 20th century. As far as harmony is concerned, the tonality is still present, but considerably weakened by the invention of exterior notes, by the clash of half-tones grouped in chromatic coloring and by a variety of accompaniments in constant and rapid evolution. His message of melody is concentrated, aiming at "openings" in the polyphony. (source from gallo record label) There is no copyright infringement intended.
