I use a can to measure out the right amount of wood pellets to fuel my stove. Different models and brands require different amounts of fuel, so it is important to first of all figure out how much fuel you need to fill your wood gas stove and then find a container with the appropriate volume. This gets rid of the need to measure out quantities, which in turn saves time. The second technique is to pre-package the wood pellets and lighting kit into zip lock bags. This technique pre-measures the quantities needed, keeps the fuel dry and also ensures that the fire lighting kit readily accessible. The bags and lighting kit are all you need to fuel the wood gas stove. This works kind of like a packaged product, but you do the packaging and measuring yourself. The idea is that you can grab a zip lock bag full of wood pellets, open the bag, pour the contents of the bag into the stove, drop the petroleum jelly coated cotton ball on top of the pellets and then light the cotton ball using a ferro rod. It’s also possible to add a pack of inexpensive matches to the lighting kit if you don’t prefer to use a ferro rod. However, I recommend using a ferro rod, because a ferro rod can also be used to relight the flame of a wood gas stove which has been blown out by the wind and begins to smoke. It takes seconds to fuel and light a stove, which is almost as fast and easy as lighting a propane stove.

I also use welding gloves in order to protect my hands from the fire, the hot metal of the stove and the hot pan. This minimizes the risk of burns. In addition to gloves, I use long reach pliers to work with the cotton ball and pick up parts of the hot stove. Long reach pliers work almost like fire tongs for a wood gas stove. The pliers keep your fingers far away from the hot parts of the stove, while still allowing you to work with fire, fuel and hot metal.

The stoves are placed on bricks because the stoves sometimes produce embers which fall out of the stove. If these embers fall on brick, they cannot start a fire. I make sure that nothing underneath or around my wood gas stove can light on fire. In the video I place the bricks on the grass. These stoves generate enough warmth to heat the bricks hot enough to destroy the grass underneath, leaving a bare patch on your lawn. It’s better to set up the stoves on bare earth, sand, or some kind of hard surface like rock or cement. Choose an appropriate surface which cannot catch on fire or be damaged by the heat.

In this video, I also demonstrate how to make petroleum jelly coated cotton balls. This fire-starter technique is a really easy way to light the wood gas stove. I also show a piece of paraffin wax saturated pure cotton cloth, in this case jean material. The paraffin wax soaked cotton cloth works essentially like a wick. The petroleum jelly coated cotton balls work really well, but they emit an unpleasant smell when they are burning, almost like burning oil. People will notice this smell. The paraffin wax soaked cotton just smells like burning candles—no one seems to think twice if they smell something that smells like burning candles. If you don’t want to irritate sensitive neighbours, then wax cloth could be the best option.

Be sure to use a good dose of common sense and take adequate safety precautions when using these stoves. It is important to use the stoves outside, and ensure that nothing around the stove can catch on fire.
