We're preparing for a World Championship Blacksmiths #competition that's in Kentucky this March. There's three different classes or disciplines at the contest. One being, Tool & Fullered Hunter Shoeing day. In this video the four of us-Gavine Cooper, Brian Strelow, Jesse Wilson and Riley Kirkpatrick are teammates competing together. This is a practice go we did in the time limit of 2.5 hours.
The caulk & wedge are a traction device on the hind shoes for horses that would be out in a field fox hunting. Tool & Fullered shoes are a traditional English shoe that has been around for a long time, being the predecessor to "concave" stock that you can buy from a store. These #horseshoes start as 5/8" square stock and is ran through a "tooling" block to #create a section of steel that is then split with a splitter to open it up. You then turn the shoe, fuller it, punch it, and then pritchel to have a functional horseshoe. These are probably now the most #artistic kind of horseshoes rather that practical because of the amount of work it takes to build them and make them look appealing.
This will be a fun, but challenging contest for us and I'll continue to share videos along the #journey !
