Switchboard was commissioned by and dedicated to Thomas Giles.
A few words from the composer:
"Switchboard is about streams of things—breath, fingerings, voicing, tonguing—and about how these streams of things can cooperate, or compete, how they contribute to the production of sound, and how they mask one another. In different permutations, the streams create two seemingly disparate musical objects: a raucous, unstable cacophony and a quiet, delicate trill. As the two objects approach one another, their streams of things shifting little by little, the similarities between the two objects become manifest. But even as these objects are constantly transforming, they are also forced to maintain their separate identities—a process that eventually causes them to fragment and spin out." - Jasmine Thomasian
