On 24th September 2025, the world of literature bid farewell to one of its most powerful and celebrated voices – Dr. Santeshivara Lingannaiah Bhyrappa, popularly known as Dr. S. L. Bhyrappa. The 94-year-old Kannada novelist, philosopher, and thinker passed away in Bengaluru, leaving behind a treasure of stories, thoughts, and philosophies that will continue to inspire generations.
Born on 20th August 1931 in the village of Santeshivara, Hassan district, Karnataka, Dr. Bhyrappa’s life journey was nothing short of extraordinary. He endured immense hardships in his childhood – losing his mother and siblings to a plague at the tender age of 11, facing poverty, and even working as a railway porter to survive. Yet, his determination and love for knowledge carried him forward, eventually making him one of the greatest literary figures India has ever seen.
