Pankrác metro station just reopened after a year-long closure. New escalators, modern lighting, better accessibility. But that's not why it was closed.
While passengers were using replacement buses, engineers were building something 33 meters underground: a massive station cavern for Prague's fourth metro line. The excavation is 85% complete, deep enough to fit a ten-story building, and it's happening directly beneath an operating metro station.
This isn't just a renovation. It's the foundation for a transport hub projected to handle 120,000 passengers daily—putting it in the same tier as Prague's busiest stations.
What's being built:
Transfer tunnels connecting two metro lines (C and D)
Deep excavation 33 meters below current platforms
Infrastructure for fully automated, driverless trains
New tram connections integrated at street level
The scale:
When the first segment of Metro D opens (2029-2031), Prague will add 8.4 kilometers of new metro line and 8 new stations to the network. Pankrác is being engineered as the transfer point connecting the city center to the southern suburbs.
