Follow along to learn the features and benefits of the ButterflyCups are, and the PROS and
CONS as per our findings.
Notes:
ButterflyCup has partnered with PTTMCC Biochem to bring to the consumer a completely
biodegradable, compostable and recyclable paper cup. Traditionally, paper cups are coated with
non-biodegradable polyethylene plastic (PE) in order to create a barrier between the liquid and the
absorbent paper. BioPBS is biodegradable and it is an environmentally friendly alternative to PE.
Paper cups coated in BioPBS are compostable at ambient temperature, which means that if you
simply bury your cup in the soil, within 180 days BioPBS coated paper will start to biodegrade into
biomass, carbon dioxide and water through a natural process, leaving zero negative impact on the
environment. The duration of biodegradation depends on the micro-organism, moisture and
temperature in the soil. Paper coated with BioPBS, is recyclable by paper mills. Additionally, BioPBS
has been certified for compostability in USA, EU, Japan as well as other countries, following
standard numbers EN13432, EN14995, ASTM D6400, ISO17088, and TIS17088. BioPBS is food contact safe and certified by U.S.FDA (FCN No.1574, 1643), JHOSPA in Japan and complies with
European (EU10/2011).
