Grow Leucaena Leucocephala from Seed: White Lead Tree / River Tamarind / Ipil Ipil (English)
Common names: river tamarind, jumbay, white lead tree, ipil-ipil, subabul tree, white popinac, safed, babool, Soundal, Guajes
Leucaena leucocephala (loo-kee-na lew-ka-cefala) is native to southern Mexico and northern Central America and can now be found throughout the tropics. It has many different common names in many countries, such as River Tamarind, White Lead Tree and Ipil Ipil. The tree can be planted to prevent soil erosion, as a shade plant for plantation crops, and for it's nitrogen fixing properties. The legume provides an excellent source of cattle fodder, the wood can be utilized for charcoal, and it has also been considered for biomass production. On the down side, it is susceptible to the sap-sucking psyllid insect, Heteropsylla cubana. During the 70s and 80s it was promoted as a "miracle tree" for its multiple uses, but it has also been described as a "conflict tree" because it spreads like a weed. In fact, it has the honorable distinction of being included in the 100 worst invasive species list by the Invasive Species Specialist Group.
The young leaves, pods, and flower buds are edible and eaten raw, steamed, mixed in soups, or with rice. The seeds can also be dried and used as a coffee substitute. NOTE : The plant leaves contains the amino acid mimosine, which in large quantities can be toxic - so eat with care!
Conclusion: I did not have much luck germinating the dry seeds. I had about a 40% success rate with green seeds germinated directly in soil and about a 40% success rate with green seeds germinated placed on top of a moist paper towel in a box with a clear top, and then transplanted into soil.
Key Points:
#1: 02:37 Method 1 - plant seeds directly in soil
#2: 03:00 Method 2 - germinate in container
#3: 03:47 Transplant into soil
#4: 04:50 One month results!
