STORYLINE:
More than 12,000 police and paramilitary troops were deployed to the site of the disputed Ayodhya temple on Thursday, a day before Hindu fundamentalists were expected to go ahead with a banned ceremony.
Hindu fundamentalists planned to hold the ceremony on Friday as part of a programme to build a temple to their god Rama on the site of the mosque, setting up a possible showdown with security forces.
The troops, including 3,000 from special forces, marched through Ayodhya as a show of strength on behalf of the Indian government.
The government is determined to stop any Hindu gathering in the area after the Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday that Hindu nationalists could not hold prayers on the site.
The attorney-general had previously said that Hindu nationalists should be allowed to hold a religious ceremony on the government-owned piece of land near where the mosque stood before Hindu extremists destroyed it in 1992.
In anticipation of violence, the majority of Muslims living in Ayodhya have left the city.
On February 27, violence erupted in Godhra in western Gujarat state, when a Muslim mob set fire to a train carrying Hindus home from a pilgrimage to Ayodhya.
Vengeful Hindus then torched Muslim homes and businesses across the state, and 709 people, mostly Muslim, have been killed.
