Watermills continued to intrigue Vincent in 1884. In the autumn, he visited a fourth watermill near Nuenen. This time, he had to walk quite a distance: the Gennep watermill is located south of Eindhoven, about 9 kilometers from his studio. He braved the wind and weather.

"These days, despite the rather cold frost here, I'm still working outside on a rather large study (over a meter long) of an old watermill in Gennep, on the other side of Eindhoven. I want to finish it entirely outdoors – but it will probably be the last thing I paint outdoors this year," he wrote to Theo in mid-November.

He captured the structure several times. He worked on the aforementioned large canvas of the mill in the landscape and also created a painted close-up of the wheels, as well as a watercolor. During Vincent's stay in Nuenen, two wheels were turning, with the smaller one used for oil extraction. The mill is situated in a stream valley landscape; the Dommel and Tongelreep rivers converge here.

In the autumn of 1884, Vincent met the tanner and amateur painter Anton Kerssemakers, with whom he painted the wooden mill in the hamlet of Gennep. In mid-November, Vincent wrote to Theo that the painting of the Gennep watermill had "brought him a new acquaintance in Eindhoven who desperately wanted to learn to paint, and whom I visited, and we immediately began working together." He gave painting lessons to this "acquaintance," seven years his senior, and became friends. They corresponded, went on painting trips, and visited museums in Amsterdam and Antwerp. Kerssemakers visited Vincent in his studio, and Vincent visited him in Eindhoven.
