External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the Rajya Sabha on the worsening West Asia crisis and outlined India’s position on the escalating tensions. He said the situation deteriorated sharply after the February 28 US–Israeli strikes on Iran that reportedly killed key leaders, triggering further escalation with Iranian attacks on Gulf nations, oil depots, and major infrastructure.

Jaishankar expressed India’s deep concern over the developments and reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only path to de-escalation and peace. He also noted that the region is extremely important for India’s energy security and is home to nearly 1 crore Indians, along with thousands of Indian nationals in Iran.

The government, including the Prime Minister, the Cabinet Committee on Security, and relevant ministries, is closely monitoring the situation. Ensuring the safety and welfare of Indian citizens in the region remains the top priority while authorities are also keeping a close watch on possible risks to global crude oil supplies. India has also responded to certain Iranian maritime requests in line with its national interest.
