A Clean, Well-Lighted Place
By Ernest Hemingway
The story is set late at night in a Spanish café where two waiters—one young and impatient, the other older and more reflective—are waiting for their last customer to leave. The customer is a deaf, elderly man who is slightly drunk and had recently attempted suicide.
The young waiter, eager to close up and go home to his wife, is dismissive and unsympathetic towards the old man. In sharp contrast, the older waiter expresses a deep understanding and empathy, recognizing the old man's need for the café as a "clean, well-lighted place"—a sanctuary from the overwhelming darkness and despair of solitude.
After the young waiter finally forces the old man to leave, the older waiter reflects on his own life and a growing sense of nihilism, symbolized by the Spanish word "nada" (nothing). He struggles with insomnia and a profound realization that he, too, is among those who need light, order, and cleanness to combat the existential void, finding that a well-kept café is a temporary, but vital, defense against the ultimate meaninglessness of life.
