Imani Bashir, known widely on social media as Imani B, is a respected writer, journalist, social commentator, and media maverick whose incisive voice challenges prevailing narratives in American culture. Recently, she forcefully called out anti-Black rhetoric in American media and public discourse, particularly narratives embraced by influential public figures. Among these are comments from Mayor Zohran Mamdani, celebrating New York as “built by immigrants,” and country artist Shaboozey, who at the 2026 Grammys declared that “immigrants built this country” while honoring his Nigerian immigrant parents. Shaboozey later clarified that his words were not meant to diminish the central role of Black Americans, acknowledging that his historic win stands “on the foundation laid by generations of Black people.” Bashir emphasizes that while immigrants have undeniably contributed to America’s cultural and economic landscape, to suggest that immigrants alone built the nation erases the foundational labor and sacrifice of Black Americans, whose forced and unpaid work under slavery for over 400 years established the economic, structural, and institutional foundations of the United States. Recognizing immigrant contributions does not negate this history; rather, to conflate the two without acknowledging the central role of Black Americans obscures one of the most profound truths in American history.
